The Smalls Street Sounds (www.thesmalls.com/streetsounds) is a brand new interactive event championing the use of diverse sounds collected by the public in filmmaking. Thanks to the generous support of Scion (www.scion.com), we are able to encourage and support artists to listen to, be inspired by and use sounds in a new way to tell their stories.

The Sound Map is an interactive tool developed specifically for The Smalls Street Sounds, which invites the public to share the sounds of their environment by uploading their own recordings, along with a brief description and a picture. These recordings can be anything from the rumble of the local train to neighbors speaking in a foreign language, or the sound of kids playing baseball in the neighborhood park to a protest demonstration or simply the sound of the wind in the trees. Uploaded sounds are made available to other users of the Sound Map, and users can easily search for inspiring sounds via keywords or by navigating the map geographically.

The Smalls Street Sounds calls on filmmakers to continually use the Sound Map to create unique short films inspired by the collected sounds. Our most recent competition, The Smalls Street Sounds filmmaking competition, has now closed its call for entries. Everyone who entered will have their films screened on www.thesmalls.com. The public vote produces a shortlist of 6 films, from which a distinguished panel of judges from the film, television and media industry selects the winners. The winners will be announced in a full-page ad in Variety and they will each receive a Panasonic HDC-HS300 120GB Full HD Camcorder.
