CAN YOU INTERPRET THIS?

For the Street Sounds film competition, we hope these themes will inspire you! Choose ONE and interpret it in any way you like in an original film that is a maximum of 3 minutes long and uses a minimum of three sounds from the Sound Map.

THE STREET

What does your neighborhood street sound, look, smell and feel like? When you think of The Street do you automatically think of Wall Street? Or does your mind wander to Where The Streets Have No Name? What is The Street in your life, the one you ride every day to get to work, school or to get home – or the one you always dreamed of taking a road trip on? What people share your street? From New Orleans’ Bourbon Street to Sunset Boulevard in LA, show us your world. Or, don’t show us any of the above – the interpretation is yours and completely open. Regardless of The Street interpretation in your story, we look forward to be taken on the journey.

A STATE OF MIND

Creative types are often moody – and that can be the beauty of being one. Your State of Mind can change one day to the next, make a U-turn in a split second, or maybe you're just able to stay on course for as long as you're able to focus on your happy place. When it comes to this theme, take your time – consider your State of Mind in the happiest of times or the worst of times, or anytime in between and create a film about it. Thoughtful, meditative, sad, longing, delirious, jealous, content; this is your chance to delve into the whole spectrum of human emotions and get your audience to share a State of Mind. Maybe just keep your camera handy and wait for that right moment of inspiration when one emotion overtakes you – that can make for some visceral, raw filmmaking. Whatever state you’re in, allow us into your mind for three minutes.

AMERICA

Who is America? Where does she come from? What does he want? Is it a place or a destination? Is it a memory or just a dream? Take us to see your America. America The Beautiful. Or maybe America the Not So Beautiful. This is a chance to take your ideas, your philosophies and your experiences and focus your sights on what really matters to you. Maybe thinking of America reminds you of something from childhood. Perhaps it makes you think of where – or who – you want to be in the future. We know that America is not just a collection of states, so tell us what America really means to you and what feelings and thoughts the word inspires in you.

THE UNEXPECTED

Sometimes The Unexpected just happens. Sometimes it is a person, sometimes an event and sometimes we have no idea what it actually is until it hits us. The Unexpected arrival of death, love, friendship or bad weather can catch all of us off guard. What happens when a completely ordinary character like you or me ends up in unexpected circumstances, and do our resulting actions change the course of our lives? The Unexpected can be incredible, spectacular and magnificent but it can also be something really tiny – like the untimely crack in a fingernail or the moving song of the tiniest bird in the most unexpected of places. Surprise, laughter, tears. Show us The Unexpected.

Feel free to interpret above themes as loosely or as closely as you like. They are here to inspire you and set your imagination free. If you have any questions or thoughts on our themes, feel free to send an email to streetsounds@thesmalls.com.
