With a goal to present work from women filmmakers from around the world, the event aims to include everything from fun comedies to investigative documentaries. One of the things we really loved to learn about Brooklyn Film Fest is that $1.00 from each submission fee will go to the Reel GRRLS scholarship fund, a non-profit organization based in Seattle, WA that offers high school girls the opportunity to learn filmmaking and make their own movies. We learned through the BFI that in order to celebrate the dramatist Terence Rattigan's birth, his biographer Michael Darlow now introduces a whole season of his memorable films in London. Short Story Challenge

The Short Story Challenge, an international writing competition that is open to writers around the world, welcomes you to register. There are two rounds of the competition. In the 1st Round (February 4-12, 2011) writers are placed randomly in heats. Each heat is assigned a genre and a subject. Writers then have 8 days to write an original short story (2,500 words max). Winners are chosen from this first round to advance to the 2nd round and compete for thousands in cash and other prizes. In the 2nd Round (April 1-2, 2011) all writers receive the same genre and subject at midnight (EST time) and then have 24 hours to write an original short story. A panel of judges review the final round of stories and choose the winners. Who knows, maybe a short story you write here could later become a great script for a film?

2011 BlueCat Fellini Screenwriting Awards

The 2011 BlueCat Fellini Screenwriting Awards are accepting Short Screenplays (5-40 pages) and Feature Screenplays (80-130 pages). Each script entered will receive two written script analyses and five winners will receive a MacBook Pro with Final Draft software, or the cash equivalent. Brooklyn Screenwriting Workshop

Presented by Chez Bushwick and led by Gabriel Long, this workshop is based on the idea that the best way to learn and polish the craft of screenwriting is through writing and workshopping screenplays. Over the course of 4 weeks, each participant will write a short, (3-5 page), script that will be workshopped by the class. The goal is to prepare participants for feature-film screenwriting by using their short scripts as a means for honing their writing skills. Gabriel has evaluated scripts for Lawrence Bender, (Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting), and Larry Kasanoff, (True Lies, Beowulf).

TCFF announces our first Summer Film Challenge. Join us at System Productions and bring your films with you. First come, first screened. Bring a short film or sample of your work, introduce yourself and tell us about your filmmaking passion. Then, register for the Summer Film Challenge. Registered filmmakers and production companies will be handed a list of criteria to make a short film and bring us a 10 minute short for the following 4th Friday party on June 25. All completed films will be screened at that party and voted on by our judges. The winner will be screened at the festival and score 2 all-access Producer Passes to The Clearwater Film Festival, September 29 - October 3.

FILMMAKING TERMS: THREE-POINT LIGHTING

Are you lighting a short film? Need to grasp the basics of the simplest lighting setup? Then three-point lighting is what you need to figure out. It is the most basic kind of lighting setup, using three different light sources. The three lighting sources used in three-point lighting is usually referred to as the Key Light, the Fill Light and the Back Light. This is how they work and what they are good for: Key Light in a three-point lighting setup is usually a very bright and hard light that shines straight onto your actor/actress or any object you may be filming. While the Key Light works in brightening up your scene, it is not enough. On its own it can create very strange shadows and make your film a little flat in its appearance. (When you see a first project by many filmmakers, done without any knowledge of lighting, you are likely to find it very flat – because they only used one Key Light.) Your Key Light can also be places slightly to the side, not straight ahead of your subje

FILMMAKING TERMS: WHITE BALANCE

Photographers and cinematographers must understand how essential ‘white balance’ is for the images they capture. To the naked eye, any light source may look white – through the lens of a film or video camera, the light source can be anything from orange to blue. That’s why many professionals will use lens filters – but with today’s technology many digital cameras come with white balance correction capabilities. In the simplest explanation possible, choosing the correct white balance is matching the correct color temperature to the primary light source. A light source with a low temperature, like a regular light bulb, will be seen to be more reddish. High temperature lights like fluorescents will skew towards the blue. If you’re adjusting the white balance manually on your digital camera, all you need to do is to point the camera at a white surface (some professionals keep a white card with them) and allow the camera to adjust. Many cameras also come with white balance presets.

In the United States, the Clapper Loader is often referred to as “Second Assistant Camera”. Whatever you want to call it, it is the dude/dudette who is charged with keeping the clapperboard in place at each take of a shoot, loading raw film into the camera magazines and keeping the camera crew’s paperwork organized. Sometimes the Clapper Loader is also in charge of marking props and actors, keeping inventory and organizing of all camera equipment, film and other camera related gear, ordering film stock, preventing light leaks and cleaning the equipment. Needless to say, the Clapper Loader plays an important part in any shoot. Apart from assisting he DP and other camera crew, it is crucial that the Clapper Loader knows how to work with trainees and runners – a motivated and skilled camera trainee can make a huge difference to how smoothly a shoot runs.
