The Marigold Project
Luther van der Watt surprised us all with his entry into The Marigold Project. He is a young filmmaker, who only recently graduated from The Open Window School of Visual Communication and unlike most of our members, who are US or UK based, he lives and works in South Africa. His video has already been seen by more than 7,000 people on The Smalls and has landed him a promo gig with BIC. He shares with us a few of this thoughts on The Marigold Project and what inspired him to create the dreamy, sweet video that won the hearts of Southbound Drive – and everyone else.
We've been closely following the making of short film Geoffrey's Belt, by Smalls filmmakers Renee Tillott and Tom Bacon, in a series of interviews title 'Life of a Short Film'. With 10 locations to secure – including a department store and jewellery store setting – producer Renee Tillot had her work cut out for her. In the third installment of 'Life of a Short Film' shares her team's approach to art direction, casting and arduous job of location scouting!
We first came across the work of Spanish filmmaker Chema García Ibarra at the Berlinale 2013, where his short film Misterio was screened as a part of the Berlinale Shorts programme. As one of 28 films, Misterio was definitely a standout. Chema has a strong style with a penchant for outer space, middle-aged women and awkward heroes.
