Job Description


6 month contract duration

The Role:

To design and layout pages to set deadlines and within the guidelines set by Creative Editor/Creative Director, to achieve high standards of typography, picture usage and colour. To check proofs against layouts and ensure correct interpretation of design to the style sheet of the title.

Accountabilities:

· Design pages using Adobe/Indesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop with attention to appropriate layouts, typography, picture usage and colour.
· Ensure designs accurately comply with the style sheet and maintain the look of the title.
· Complete all pages distributed by the Creative Director/Creative Editor by set production deadlines.
· Check layouts at first proof stage and make amendments when suggested by Creative Director/CreativeEditor.
· Prepare layouts for Repro - colour specifying and supplying transparencies/artwork and digital files to Repro house where necessary.
· Keep transparancies and artwork files in good order and return any artwork to illustrators when necessary. · Attend shoots occasionally.
· Attend production/planning meetings to discuss content and form of issues.
· To comply with all relevant BBCW safety rules, procedures and guidelines and to be aware of responsibilities under the BBCW safety policy.
· To comply with BBCW’s policies on Diversity and to apply the principles of the policy when carrying out the role.

Context of the role:

The Designer will work within the art department but liaise and work with the wider editorial group. They may be asked to work on extra material such as supplements, picture research or attend magazine events, photoshots as a representative of the editorial team, when appropriate.

Experience required:

· Qualifications in design, BTEC/HND essential, BA Hons Graphic design preferred or equivalent experience required.

· Competent skills in Indesign, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator/ Freehand. Indesign training may be given to the right candidate.

· Significant design experience essential.

· Ability to prioritise and work using initiative to meet strict deadlines.

· Ability to contribute ideas, communicate and support a team environment.

· Some experience of picture research, liasing with Repro houses and printers desirable.

· Experience of commissioning Illustrators/Photographers desirable.

· Attention to detail & a passion for magazines are musts.

· Experience of working on Youth titles/magazines desirable.

· We would also like to hear from experienced freelancer designers with Indesign experience.
