General

What is The Smalls
The Smalls is a community for filmmakers and other creative people who love short film.
Why should I join The Smalls?
Because you are a filmmaker or a creative brand that would like to showcase your work, make friends with other creative people and have the opportunity to connect with potential audience members, commissioners and distributors of your films.
How much does it cost to join The Smalls?

It is free to join The Smalls as a Basic member. But if you want to have access to all the great tools and features that we offer then we recommend you upgrade to a Pro membership. A Pro membership only costs £40 per year and aside from a range of cool networking and collaborating applications the Pro membership also lets you submit to pitches and other fantastic creative opportunities!

I have gone through the sign up process but haven’t received an email confirming my membership, what should I do?
Check your spam filter, as sometimes emails like your activation email can end up there. Also, give the activation email a little time to come through – a few minutes at least. If you still need help, please contact us.
What is the best way to upload a film to your site?

Go to www.thesmalls.com/upload-film to upload your film. You do need to register and login before you can upload your film.

What format should my film be in?
You can upload mp4, ogg, avi, mov, wmv, flv, ogv, webm.
How do I upload a film?
When you are logged into your account, go to the “Upload” page. From there simply follow the instructions. Please make sure that you are only uploading films that you have created and/or own all the rights to the materials and music used. If uploading your film takes a little time, please be patient. It can be because many people are uploading at the same time. Not a member yet? Sign up and get started with showcasing your films.
I get an error message when I upload or I cannot see my film uploaded even if it should have been completed. What do I do now?

Give it another go. If it still doesn’t work, please email support@thesmalls.com.

How do I get my film featured on your Home page, on your social media channels or in one of your Playlists?
Our staff watches films that are uploaded and feature the ones that they feel are really good, and that represent the creative, diverse community that The Smalls is – so you don’t need to alert us that your film has been added to our community. If your film has won an award or you want to update us on anything else that has happened since you uploaded your film feel free to contact us and let us know so we can give your achievements a special mention.
I’d like to use your logo to show others where my film has been featured, how can I get it?
Go to our Press page www.thesmalls.com/press and you will find our logo available for download.
Does my Smalls profile and film pages work on my tablet or phone?
Yes. Your Smalls account is accessible from almost any device. We will be launching a mobile/tablet version of the site soon!
I would like to share a video tutorial with you, how do I do this?

Please start by getting in touch with us and in your email message tell us a bit about yourself, and what kind of tutorial it is that you would like to share. Any link so that we can view the tutorial helps.

When you change your membership from Pro to Basic, your most popular films (up to 1GB in total capacity) will be saved and show on your Basic profile. The rest of your profile information and films will be stored for 30 days on The Smalls server. We do this because we want to give you the option to change your mind. When those 30 days have passed your films and profile information will be removed from our servers.

Can I password protect my Pro pages?

This feature is coming soon. Stay tuned.

What is the “Wallet” for? And, how do I use it?

The wallet is an application that we have created so that you are able to easily receive any licensing fees that your films accumulate – if you choose to put your film forward for licensing (this is optional, and you make this choice when you upload your film).

If my film is licensed, how do I know?

We will notify you via email.

How do I get paid if my film is licensed?

We make all licensing payments via PayPal. If you wish to collect the money earned in your wallet, please ensure you have added your correct PayPal email address linked up to your wallet. Then go to your wallet and click “Empty wallet”.

Films

How do I upload a film?

When you are logged into your account, go to www.thesmalls.com/upload-film. From there simply follow the instructions. Please make sure that you are only uploading films that you have created and/or own all the rights to the materials and music used. If uploading your film takes a little time, please be patient. It can be because many people are uploading at the same time. Not a member yet? Go to www.thesmalls.com/user/sign-up and get started with uploading and showcasing your films.

Can I add information about my film while it is being processed to appear on my profile?

When you have seen the progress bar for your upload complete, your film starts processing to appear on your profile. While this happens you can go ahead and add tags, description or give those who helped you make the film credit.

My upload stopped before it was completed, why am I having trouble?

This could have something to do with your internet connection. If your connection dips or times out, your upload will be interrupted. Other tips include to make sure you don’t have too many other applications open. If your internet connection is fine and you are not engaging in too many other activities at the same time, take a look at your film file and make sure it is in one of these formats: mp4, ogg, avi, mov, wmv, flv, ogv, or webm. Still having trouble? Send us a message at support@thesmalls.com and include as much information as possible about your film (file size, format, browser you are using etc).

The upload of my film doesn’t start, what should I do?

Make sure that your internet connection is working. If you are trying to upload a film on a weaker internet connection, close down all other windows and activity. And give it a little time. If it still doesn’t work, send a message to support@thesmalls.com.

Do I need to have a special program installed to upload my film?

No, you only need your internet browser and connection to be working.

Why is it taking a while to upload my film?

There could be a number of reasons. Check that your internet connection is working, and that your film is in one of these formats: mp4, ogg, avi, mov, wmv, flv, ogv, or webm. Also make sure you are not running any programs or have busy browser open that may keep your upload from running as fast as it can. Please note that after your film has uploaded it can take a little while for our systems to do what they need in order for your film to show up on your Profile. If your film has not appeared on your profile within 1-2 hours after you have uploaded it, send us a message at support@thesmalls.com.

What film file formats do you recommend?

These film file formats work well on The Smalls: mp4, ogg, avi, mov, wmv, flv, ogv, or webm.

Can I upload any kind of film that I want?

Yes and no. We encourage you to share your work in any genre, but please make sure that it does not violate our Prohibited Content Policy or our Terms of Use

Can I upload commercials to The Smalls?

Yes you can if you created them. Like with all short form content that you add to the site, make sure you have ownership and rights of use.

Can I upload music videos to The Smalls?

In your profile, navigate to "Manage My Films" and click to delete. Please note that once your film has been deleted it is removed from our servers. If you wish to share it on The Smalls, you need to upload it again.

Why are my films playing slowly or stuttering?

Poor film playback can depend on a number of factors. Firstly, make sure that you have a good internet connection. Then make sure that you don’t have several other programs running, or too many other tabs open in your browser. Finally, if your film still plays back slowly or stutters, try another browser. Still having problems? Contact support@thesmalls.com.

Do you have a maximum file size for film uploads?

You can upload film files that are up to 0.5GB (500MB) in size.

Rights, Permissions and Licenses

Who owns my films after I upload them to The Smalls?

You do.

How are the rights to my work affected when I upload a film?

When we created The Smalls we did so to help filmmakers get exposure and find new audiences for their films. Throughout the years it has been our experience that most people want to be generous with their work and want to share the power to distribute, change and reuse it with others to help them showcase their film and their talent to the rest of the world. To accommodate this we have created some pretty standard Terms and Conditions that sum up what we are all about and how we operate. Check them out and if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact us at info@thesmalls.com at any time.

What does “licensing” mean and how does it apply to me and my films?

When you upload your film to The Smalls you also make it available for licensing to broadcasters, other media owners and brands that fall in love with your work and want to show it to their audiences. Great, right? Now, apart from getting recognition and appreciation for your film through having it licensed, you also earn money from a licensing deal for your film. The exact rates vary depending on who licenses your film. The Smalls will always contact you before your film is licensed, so that you can approve the terms of such a deal. So you can just sit back and relax for now, until the good stuff starts happening.

What if I don’t want to make my film available for licensing?

That’s fine. When you upload your film you make that choice.

I have seen a film that I really like and I would like to use it, or parts of it, for something. What do I do?

Please start by contacting the filmmaker for his/her permission. Then it is up to him/her to decide if you can go ahead or not.

Patron Membership

What is a Patron membership, and who is it for?

Patron memberships are for organizations and brands that would like to become part of The Smalls community. A Patron membership allows a brand to reach out to filmmakers, artists and content creators who can help them tell their stories through short films or that can help them generate ideas for a new strategy or campaign. But a Patron membership is also for commissioners and distributors of film, who want to be part of the Smalls network to find new talent and projects. Soon The Smalls Pitch Room will open, where Patrons can post briefs and opportunities. Brands interested in becoming a Patron are welcome to contact us at patron@thesmalls.com
