Creating a different world for your story does not have to cost a fortune. You may think you need expensive props to pull off a believable horror film, or a gripping drama, but you are wrong – there is nothing that says you can’t find and work with excellent props even on a tight (or zero) budget.
Again, just like with your film's wardrobe, start out by listing all the items that you would ideally have at your disposal. Then narrow this list down to the items that you must have. Once you know your key props, go after these first. If you can, take some time out to consider alternatives. Always remain flexible too, as a search for the perfect prop may turn up exciting different alternatives.
Once you have your “dream list” and your “must have list”, arm yourself with a plan of attack and start searching for free or cheap props.
Ways to save money on props:
- Post notices on local bulletin boards, in shops, bars and other local places, asking for free use of a particular item. Use online notice boards and forums too. As with all other costs, offer associate producer credits or otherwise, to help sweeten the deal.
- Make sure you try and connect with people in your local community so that no shipping or travel is involved to view and secure your prop.
- Instead of looking around for weeks for the right prop, look inside your own life – maybe your car, your posters and even your own toys from back when you were a kid, can serve as perfect props for your movie. Venture into the attic or your basement, open old boxes and bags and see what you can find. Not only can this save you money but add personal texture to your movie too, making it more authentic.
- If you do rent props, return them on time. Usually the cost of keeping items way longer than you should can set you back (sometimes even thousands of $). Read the fine print of any rental agreement and make sure you have ample insurance for any props you rent or borrow.
