The Basement

“In The Basement” is a compilation of damaged footage found in a basement

in Basra, Iraq. The film is the story of an Iraqi video blogger who gets

trapped in his basement after an American artillery shell destroys his family

home. Unable to maintain contact with friends and loved ones, he lives in a

state of constant fear of the house‟s foundation collapsing, and grows

increasingly paranoid thanks to impending starvation. In an effort to

maintain his sanity, the „blogger‟ clings to the only routine he has left, and

starts to voice his anger against the invading American forces through his

video camera. The film depicts a complete turnaround in his personality –

his liberal self being replaced by a fanatic religious zeal thirsting for

revenge.
