First taking to the stage in a series of spontaneous gigs at parties across Paris in 2000
The Snifflebrothers quickly became popular amongst their peer group.
Sharing a living space, Whittle and Ancil forged a strong and prolific musical
partnership, charting the delights of their free-living, crossed-checked with the lows and
confusion such a lifestyle can often bring about.
Performing around London (The Electroacoustic Club, The Comedy Pub, Leicester
Square, Crucial Music Club, 1001 Acoustic Nights, Spice of Life, White Hart, The
Hoedown, The Get on Down, British Council Christmas Party, Saneline Fundraiser)
under various guises and with Franco’s Chariot and Mississippi Macdonald’s Blues
Caravan, The Snifflebrothers put out their second release earlier this month. Simply
entitled “Number Twos” the album will be available online and, in a similar fashion to its
predecessor “The Sniffle Record”, is simply being given away.
Combining tight melodies, warming harmonies and an enthusiastic stage persona with
intriguing storytelling The Snifflebrothers (James Whittle: guitar and vocals and Chris
Ancil: lead vocals) will often encourage the audience to compete among themselves to
win tropical fruits.
More than twenty songs were written and demoed in the first few months with
seemingly no end to the inspiration surrounding them. Many of these still appear in The
Snifflebrothers act combined with more recent compositions recorded both at home and
BBC Bush House.
From the crowd sing-along of “Only Fish in Town with a Scooter”, through “Birthday
Song”’s haunting loneliness to the pseudo-political advisory of “Prison Reform”, The
Snifflebrothers touch on many musical styles, human thoughts and emotions. Totally
reworked cover versions leave the audience trying to second guess what they are
actually listening to.
All of this is a part of The Snifflebrothers experience.
