I know, it should have won gold.  Very funny, very tragic - speaks to every fat kid inside us.

Funny and sad in equal measure. Nobody who has ever been a kid is safe from the cutting message in this film.

i think he meant how did it win anything at all? Admitedly its well shot, nice colour and set/costume etc, but there has been fat kid stories since the dawn of time. Theres nothing new here, simply proves that any top production piece usually has a v good chance of winning in comps like this one. Ideas are what should come first in small comps not production values, theres tons of slick 'Ad Style' shorts out there, what do they prove? simply that the makers have experience or work in advertising and have plenty resources. Its still a good piece but for creative spark there were many better.

what do you have against higher production values?

High production values are brilliant and aide any good film, but they don't replace telling a story.  And unfortunately people seem to confuse the difference between good art direction and a good film.

Everything made by humans is subjective to other humans, ya just gotta find the human in the decision making world that subjectively likes your stuff. I don't have anything against higher production values, I just don't think comps should be judged on them. Man A makes film with 74p its great! its a top story and makes a great film, he's well happy! Man B makes an ok idea into a film [not a story but an idea] he spends £7,400 making it, it looks amazing and people gasp...then it wins. Later on the world realises it needs more than just looks...maybe thats why 75% of TV and film are not very good anymore, too many people gasping for air.
