As a monthly showcase for short films, we’re a little different from the countless film festivals that happen for a few short weeks. There are no deadlines, no entry fees, and no struggle to set your films apart from the pack. Our screenings last about an hour, with 6 or 7 great short films that never cease to impress our guests.
What we have also hoped for, and has steadily developed, is for THE CAN to be a unique forum for creative professionals to show off some of their more personal work. Cases in point are two of the local filmmakers we focused on last night, Matt Goldman and Nick Morrison. Both working professionals (Nick is part of the A&E creative team; Matt cuts music videos for Michel Gondry), these guys get to produce and make films for a living, but they also make the time to work on their own projects.
Nick’s film in particular points out exactly what makes doing THE CAN so exciting for us. Last month, shortly after completing his final cut of his film HIGH HEELS, he happened to come by THE CAN. He submitted his film days later, and this month, we got to premiere his film in front of an audience that included his colleagues, friends, and fellow filmmakers. How much easier can it get?
We’re really grateful for all of you who keep coming back, from broadcasters, creative agencies, the film community, and the vital pool of people who just love short films. The feedback from the audience and filmmakers has been great, and doing THE CAN has been as fun and inspiring for us as you have told us that it has been for you.
Thanks and see you next month!!
Hugs,
THE CAN
