Can you believe it?  It’s almost been a year since we started THE CAN.

Last night, we spent a nice, relaxing night at the White Rabbit bar, in preparation for the one-two punch of Halloween, and of course the US election next week.  For some of our guests, they were completely caught up with planning their kid’s first Trick or Treat; for others, they were still sending out Blackberry emails to their friends to encourage them to vote.  No matter what was going on in their busy lives, they were able to take a break for an hour or so, to kick back and laugh at some short films, as well as get their heart tugged a little bit.

It’s always surprising how much fun it is to commiserate with strangers over a shared admiration of short films.  Until the films begin, conversation is inevitably about work, obligations, and stress.  But afterward, everyone’s forgotten about their obligations for a little while, and conversations are about what made them laugh, what was well crafted, and what made them think.

Last night, for example, there was an overwhelming admiration for Katy Davis’ Gobblynne, a mixed media animation whose theme immediately touched people’s imagination.  About a child who enlists the ‘goblin under her bed’ to clean up her room – whether you took it literally or figuratively, the concept was simple enough to recognize and crafted in a way that stuck with viewers emotionally.  It was a great film to cap off a lineup of excellent shorts.

So – back to it being one year.  We hope you can join us for our November CAN to celebrate the momentous day.  We’ll keep you posted about when – hope you can join us!
