"The best fame is a writer's fame. It's enough to get a table at a good restaurant, but not enough to get you interrupted when you eat." - Fran Lebowitz.
Do you sometimes wonder why you want to break into showbiz, or work in the arts? Does it sometimes hit you that maybe your ego is too fragile for a lifetime in one of the most exciting but also competitive businesses? You know you want the lifestyle and creative freedom of true success, but at the same time – can you deal with all the BS and HS that usually comes with it?
In other words, let’s just cut to the chase before you read any further and start exploring a shift up, down or sideways in this crazy world. Are you ready to get seen, signed and screwed? Yeahhhhahaha? HURRAY. Then maybe – just maybe – you are ready to explore all the fabulous (and not so fabulous) entertainment career opportunities out there.
Why am I giving you these websites below then? What good is that gonna do you, huh?
Because I live in a city that is often called the “Media Capital of the World” (no offense, London). And here, through the years, I have met so many who have tried so hard to break into showbiz – because let’s face it, New York is a place where you find some of the most important newspapers, most prolific television studios and biggest record companies in the world. One third of all independent US films are produced in New York City and a respectable size of the viewing population also lives here. And, with around 100,000 New Yorkers already working in television for example – joining them may seem daunting – where do you go, where do you start your search for openings? How do you get a feeling for who is hiring, and who pays well?
But this isn’t a blog about New York job openings. I am just using my city as an example. Because I think wherever you are and whatever you want to do in entertainment, the easiest place to start your own research is the internet. It’s the place to get an idea of what’s out there today. And, you can do this research at your own time and pace.
And hey, you may already be working your favorite job – but there is no harm in looking, right?
Oh and by the way – these are in no particular order, and cover both the US and the UK. Anyone who got some great entertainment job sites for other parts of our beautiful world – post them here and SHARE. These ones cover film & TV production, administration, design, education, photo & writing.
OK, here we go – let me know what you think!
GOOD LUCK.
