EXQUISITE SHORT FILMS INSPIRED BY PARLOUR GAME

Next time you’re in the mood for a collection of short films, check out a cool series created in 2007 called Exquisite Corpse. Released by Little Minx, a division of RSA, Exquisite Corpse contains five shorts by emerging directors Laurent Briet, Chris Nelson, Malik Hassan Sayeed, Josh Miller and Phillip Van.

Now why that name, you may ask (or, well, some of you at least…). ‘Exquisite Corpse’ is the technique invented by the surrealists in the 1920s, where a set of words or images are brought together and each collaborator adds to a piece in sequence either according to a rule, or by glancing at the end of what the previous collaborator added. And the latter is exactly what the narrative films of Exquisite Corpse does – the only rules the directors had to abide by were: 1) respond to the last line of text from the previous director's script and 2) define a "Little Minx."

My personal favorite in this series is “And She Stares Longingly At What She Has Lost." by Phillip Van – a talented director who also delivered Dunny in 2007, a moving, award-winning film that I experienced recently at The Can in New York.

Curious? Check out www.littleminx.tv to see all the great films in the Exquisite Corpse series.
