The Casting Director is an essential part of pre-production for any large-scale film. You can imagine how many actors probably go through the audition process (hundreds if not thousands) – it’s not something that the director of the film can handle on his or her own. The casting director will consider all of the talented actors, weed out the ones who are not right for the roles, coordinate callbacks, and assemble the cream of the crop to present for the final say.

The casting director MUST have an eye for talent. He or she must be able to not only identify an actor with great potential, but also discern whether or not the actor has the wherewithal to take on the role and complete the film without causing any production problems. While taking a chance on a new face may be great, the last thing a casting director wants to do is recommend someone who unexpectedly turns out to be a diva on their first major movie – that’s why you’ll rarely see someone get a chance who does not have many credits, experience or a reputation.

A casting director must also be able to understand and interpret what the director wants. If the director of the film envisions a punk rock chick as the leading lady, the actress must be able to fit that role. If the director wants a villain is supposed to be big and tough, rarely should the casting director deviate and present a scrawny fellow. There’s no use in overreaching and casting anyone who will struggle to play the part. This even applies for the small roles –choices should always be made to make the shooting process more efficient. Remember, the casting director is there for the success of the movie, not the actor.

Do you think you want to be a casting director? Make sure to cultivate your taste for acting and performances. See more movies and go see some plays – anything that has to do with acting should be part of your expertise.

Good skills to have as a Casting Director:

Endurance. You have to see so many actors – you can’t get tired and start to zone off. You have to be able to stay focused and keep an eye out for the right actor.

An ability to understand the director’s vision. Whether you have a natural intuition, can figure out what the director likes from previous films he or she directed, or have a rapport that allows you to discuss in depth, you have to quickly determine what the director’s needs and goals are.

A tough skin. If you’re dealing with a difficult director or producer, you may bear the brunt of tantrums. If actors are giving you trouble, you need to be able to overcome them and come up with solutions.

Ways to become a Casting Director:

The best way to become a casting director is by working with one. Get an internship, work as an assistant, show off how organized you are and prove that you have an eye for talent. You’ll need to work with one to make the right connections and get your foot in the door.

Good luck!
