Spring has arrived, and this month’s THE CAN was a special one – just under the wire, we were able to be the first to announce the theme for this year’s Comedy Smalls Competition: WORK. Expect some great submissions from this side of the Atlantic – we know the Brits dominated in 2007, but this month’s screening in NYC was more like a political rally. From talking to our regulars afterwards, there is a huge groundswell here so look forward to some funny films this summer!
There were no mini-burger antics this month, but the menu of films was top notch as usual. With a great mix of New York and Europe based filmmakers this month. We’re proud to have screened Eric Weil and Jennifer Oxley’s latest installment of JANIE AND JEROME, an animated series that is a regular on “Sesame Street”. Two newbies to THE CAN, Jane Nechayevsky and Norma Toraya (AKA Crankbunny) had films that were big hits during the evening.
Of the films that you can see on The Smalls, we hope you check the ones we showed this week – WHEEL TIME by Tom Judd, WORK IS POINTLESS by Kris Roddam, and DIVERSION by Simon Reeves and Aidan Gibbons. For those interested submitting the Comedy Smalls, check out one of last year’s winners, BRITAIN’S BEST MATES by Jamie Glassman, Matthew Steer, and Jon Levene - it brought down the house at THE CAN. Because of the Comedy Smalls, their 10 episode series will soon be shown on Paramount Comedy!
Thanks to all the regulars who keep coming back to THE CAN – you’re our backbone and we love you for it. If you missed it this month, we hope you can join us for THE CAN on April 29th, we’d love to have you back.
