So the Oscar nominations were finally announced this week.  What did you think?  Were all your favorite movies nominated this year?  Were there any surprises?  Is this year just a showdown between James Cameron and his ex, Kathryn Bigelow?  Let us know what you think of in the Forums!

Speaking of the JC, his ‘Avatar’ is STILL #1 at the box office, having pulled in another $31.3 Million USD this past weekend – more than the majority of films make in their debut weekend.   Two new films, ‘Edge of Darkness’ (#2 @ 17.2M) and ‘When in Rome’ (#3 @ $12.4M) entered the top five yet posed no threat to the 3D epic. ‘Tooth Fairy’ ($10M) and ‘The Book of Eli’ ($8.94M) are still holding on but we predict that they will be replaced next week with some incoming releases.

The contenders this weekend?  The actioner ‘From Paris With Love’ stars John Travolta, who seems to be recycling ‘Royale with Cheese’ lines (at least in the trailer we saw).  Those in the mood for ‘the Notebook’ style romance will surely flock to the equally excitingly titled ‘Dear John’.  Though we doubt either will dethrone ‘Avatar’ quite yet.

So ‘Captain America’ is in the middle of casting – this latest entry to create a thriving Marvel movie universe is just one of the many potential crossover films in the works.  Rumors have it that Iron Man 2 will lead into an Avengers film, which will also be a loose sequel to the Edward Norton ‘Hulk’.  Confusing?  We think they should then fold it into the ‘LOST’ mythology and then call it a day.

In other casting news, Terrence Malick is back at the helm of a movie, and has put Christian Bale and Javier Bardem in it – boys, get ready to be dragged to the movies by your significant other.  ‘Enchanted’ is getting a sequel that will probably ruin what was so original about the first movie.  And if you were twiddling your thumbs waiting for the next ‘Fast and Furious’ film, twiddle no longer.  ‘Fast Five’ has been announced, and reteams Paul Walker and Vin Diesel – hurrah! More fast cars and uncomfortable eye contact between drivers!

In TV news, how can we not mention the Season 6 premiere of ‘LOST’?  We’re unabashed fans over here, and though the many new questions frustrated us to no end, we’re excited to see where the series goes and how it ends.  We’re also happy to report that the director of ‘Highlander’, one of our favorite 80’s action flicks, is at the helm of the MTV remake of ‘Teen Wolf’, created by Jeff Davis (‘Criminal Minds’).  Sounds like this won’t be as cheesy as the movie, and should fit in nicely with the latest string of successful vampire/werewolf projects coming out of H-Wood.

The DVD releases you’ll see this week include the incredibly funny ‘Zombieland’, which may or may not be on par with ‘Shaun of the Dead’. But if you look at the next three DVD covers ‘Amelia’, ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Love Happens’, do you see a running theme?  Head touching seems to be in for romance DVD covers. Our recommendations this week however are the Blu-ray releases of the Coppola restored ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Godfather Part II’.  Because they just don’t need head touching to sell themselves.

See you next week!
