Where do you think ‘Shutter Island’ finds its place within Scorsese’s oeuvre? That seems to be the debate surrounding this much-hyped thriller by the master. Overall we’re happy it debuted at #1 this week (though to mixed reviews) and it pulled in an impressive USD $41.1 Million. We were actually more surprised by how ‘Valentines Day’ didn’t completely disappear into oblivion – it held on at #2, with a paltry $16.7 M. Looks like we’re also past the ‘I saw AVATAR 15 times’ phase (it fell to #3 @ $16.2M), and ‘Percy Jackson’ ($15.3M) and ‘Wolfman’ ($9.9M) round out the Top Five.
This week, we’re seeing several new releases, but the most notable is the remake of ‘The Crazies’, which promises to continue the social commentary / horror approach of George Romero. ‘Cop Out’ is not a remake, but apparently is Kevin Smith’s homage to 80’s buddy-cop films. Will it revitalize the genre? Or remind us why these kinds of films seem appropriately stuck back in that decade? Tell us in the Forum!
If you DO have an indie movie theatre near you, definitely try to catch ‘A Prophet’, or last week’s release – ‘Ghost Writer’.
Seems to be lots of buzz regarding new projects this week. Angelina Jolie has jumped from ‘Wanted 2’ to Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi flick ‘Gravity’. Director Kevin Reynolds and Kevin Costner will be reteaming for a fourth time with ‘Learning Italian’, which doesn’t sound like a Waterworld / Robin Hood hybrid. And are you ready for another Farrelly Brothers movie? Well the wait won’t be long – ‘Hall Pass’ is being shot as we speak. Oh, and remember that Zoolander sequel you never wanted? Well the talented Justin Theroux might make it happen. And this just in – rumors are swirling around about a sequel for ‘Paranormal Activity’ directed by… Brian DePalma? Stay tuned…
Having gone a month into the final season of LOST, what are your thoughts? Are your questions being answered? Are you being thrown more questions than you ever thought would be possible with only 13 episodes to go? We’re a little mixed. The shape-shifting ‘American Idol’ is now in its finals with Ellen Degeneres in place of Paula Abdul, and a Simon Cowell who really is behaving like someone who’s given notice from their job. In other TV news, the surprise hit ‘Jersey Shore’ was threatened with a lawsuit to block its DVD release by someone who was beaten up on the show – doesn’t look like it will stick though.
The Oscars are next week, so we look forward to giving you your news brief with a sense of what the atmosphere is like in H-wood!
