Back by popular demand!  We’re going to increase the frequency of our round-ups because YOU ASKED FOR THEM.  You know this means you only have yourselves to blame, yes?  So let’s begin…

You know, as much as it is no longer a huge feat to be #1 at the box office for ONE weekend, we know that it is an achievement to be tops for two.  THE HANGOVER stayed on as the reigning box office champ for another weekend, besting the still strong UP, and shaming the opening of Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 down to a ‘mere’ $25 million US dollars.  I think this remake probably needed some snakes.

Sadly, we lost one of your great cinema stars, David Carradine, this past week.  The actor who is probably best known for being ‘Bill’ of Kill Bill was mysteriously found dead in his hotel room in Thailand.  There are ridiculous theories about how he died (Ninjas? Really?), but perhaps we should take a different approach to remembering him.  His career spanned several decades – from Scorsese’s Boxcar Bertha to Bound for Glory, he’s turned in some mighty fine performances.  Check them out.

Karate Kid has come up a few times in this column, because of the impending remake.  But the novelization based on the original 80’s masterpiece was one of the first books I read as a child – that was also inspired by a screenplay and film.  So I’m happy to report that the genre is taking a step forward.  Film buffs are clamoring to get their hands on the Dave Eggers book adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay he co-wrote with Spike Jones.  Hopefully it’s more than just a gimmick, and something tells me that it is.

In more writing news, the next 007 film will be co-written by the award winning screenwriter of Frost/Nixon and The Queen.  Peter Morgan is known for his intelligent dialogue and ability to squeeze as much drama as possible into every scene.  He’s clearly a great talent - but can he think of a good name for a Bond Girl?

What’s out on DVD this week?  There’s Tom Cruise’s eye-patch movie Valkyrie, the remake – I mean, reboot of Friday the 13th, and yet another Garfield flick.  And on Blu-Ray, LOST seasons one and two are being re-released for your super duper HD home theatre (or for many of us, just our laptop).  I know which I’m spending my hard earned dollars on, as sure as I can count 4… 8… 15…

See you in a few!
